two kinds of thinking...
The most effective kinds of writers are those who can tap into both their creative side and their analytical side of their brain. It is both the intellect as well as the imagination that brings people in. However, there are those who are more creative and there are those who are more intuitive then others. This article calls them "first-order" and "second-order", it is these two factors working together is what is needed when writing a good and convincing paper. Since each of these kinds of thinking has its own strengths and weakness they need to balance out. Writing is like a stream of organized consciousness, like an organized chaos. This is all apart of the creative process of writing.

Asia,
ReplyDeleteAs you anticipate stepping into the Learning Center next semester, do you see yourself using first-order thinking as a tutoring strategy--that is, something you might suggest students try out during a session?
I freewrite all the time--it helps me find what I really want to “say”--and I encourage writing students to try out this technique becasuse it works for me. This idea of helping students practice multiple ways of brainstorming, of drafting, or reading, and of revising/editing that works for us--and might also help them-- is really important, I think.

i think i would start off with first order, or if there is a concept to just free talk? talk about ideas and bounce them off each other until the tutee has a firm grasp on what it is they want to say or how they want to from it...i would start off with that
